Have you ever noticed when you send out an RFP you receive such a wide range of quotes? There are a number of reasons for this. Depending on how the company is internally structured, there can be lots of overhead and inefficiency. Some companies may not fully understand everything that is involved in the project. Some companies may cut corners in various areas of the project. But it can also be the case that you may be dealing with a ‘web middle man’. Essentially this is a person or company who has the client contact but does not actually have anyone on their team with web related skills. This can add tremendous markup to the overall cost of the project since everything has to be sub contracted. For some industries A ‘middle man’ business does add value to the experience of the customers. A grocery store is essentially a ‘middle man’ business since they are just reselling the products from the supplier. However, the grocery store offers a great benefit since it saves customers a lot of time buying the different products they need.
In addition, because different parts of the project are being done by different companies, the project itself usually doesn’t come together as a whole as nicely as it could. There is also additional time and frustration dealing with misunderstandings, miscommunications and the re-doing of work because different people only understand the part they are responsible for.

Nobody likes to get used. Many people do not realize that some (but not all) web companies are fully aware of the lack of knowledge their clients have about web. They take advantage of this and sometimes charge extra for time that was never used or suggest plugins or tools which really are not needed. MANY TOOLS / PLUGINS READILY AVAILABLE
Many businesses and organizations often have similar requirements for their site. The web has reached a stage where there are many high quality plugins which offer the functionality (or close to the needed functionality) of what you are trying to achieve. For example, maybe you want your own internal social media network for your employees. Building this from scratch can easily take over 3 months (along with a price tag of 3 months of work). Using a pre-built component can get us 80% of the way there. We simply need 2 weeks to customize it to suit it to your specific needs.
Some other web companies either don’t do enough research to learn and understand what is already available and unintentionally recommend building something from scratch when it really is not necessary. Some companies knowingly recommend building something from scratch because they know they can make a lot of money from it – in addition to the maintenance revenue they will be getting after the project is done.
